"For me, global solidarity means to unconditionally support and stand up for one another, no matter the geographic location. But for the humanitarian context, we have to think further:

Many of the world's crisis and emergencies are human-made, often with their starting point in the global north. Therefore, beyond unconditional humanitarian support, it is also about taking on responsibility, and reflecting our own role critically. This goes hand in hand with the rights of the addressees of our work, and our duties towards them. The key principle here is accountability.

Inequality, conflicts and denial of fundamental rights, as well as climate change and its consequences, are growing and mutually reinforcing. For a free life in dignity and health, harmful and inhumane structures must be overcome.

Let’s add a new level of responsibility to global solidarity, and a ton of creative energy to build a better world together, for all."

This is what we do:

 

Emergency Response

CADUS provides medical and technical support in crises, conflicts and disasters. Our support is needs-based, our response concepts are mobile and modular. Areas of past, present and prospective deployment include migration and refugee routes, camps, sea search and rescue, active conflict zones, pandemics, and disasters.

We uphold the humanitarian principles (read our Code of Conduct). When we witness violations of these principles, or denial of fundamental human rights, we work on making this transparent. Wherever possible, we support those affected, and confront those responsible.

 

Innovation

CADUS develops effective concepts to address new humanitarian challenges. At the heart of this is our Crisis Response Makerspace in Berlin. We collaborate with research institutions, developers, and other organizations in Germany as well as internationally.

We love interdisciplinary work, and combine our operational experience with science and crafts. Own developments are documented and published. We use, as well as advocate for, open source tools, and aim to share knowledge and skills widely.

 

Cooperation

Wherever possible, CADUS works with local partners. We focus on the inclusion of regional resources, capacities and existing knowledge, make an effort to strengthen the structures on ground, and give preference to local procurement. Ideally, addressees of our humanitarian work are involved in all phases of project design and implementation.

We are a reliable partner in agreements and plan sustainable exit strategies. Through on-site training, and the provision of teaching materials and resources, we contribute to local capacity building. Furthermore, we build and share resources with other organizations: equipment, storage and transport capacities, knowledge and skills.

 

Analysis & Debate

For CADUS, it is important to identify and address the root causes of a crisis in order to contribute to a sustainable and long-term transformation. We investigate and do focused public relations work. We organize lectures, workshops, discussion events, and contribute to scientific publications.

Within our critical approach, we examine the humanitarian field and our own role, thereby addressing political and social effects of humanitarian aid. We consider the specific context when planning and implementing projects.
